Identicon Avatar Generator

Generate deterministic geometric identicons from usernames, emails, or random seeds. Same seed always produces the exact same image.

Private by architecture: All processing is 100% client-side memory. Your data never leaves this browser tab.

About This Tool

Generates a deterministic geometric identicon from any text seed, rendered on a canvas element. The seed string is hashed with FNV-1a into a 32-bit integer, which deterministically selects a 5x5 grid pattern (mirrored horizontally for symmetry) and an HSL hue. The same seed consistently produces the identical avatar.

Identicons provide visual uniqueness without requiring user photos or AI face generation. This format is widely adopted by Git platforms, developer forums, and authentication fixtures.

Key Features

  • Fully deterministic: Identical seed text always renders the identical pattern, grid, and color.
  • Symmetric geometric pattern: A 5x5 grid mirrored left-to-right, derived mathematically from input bytes.
  • Hash-derived color: Hue is computed from the same hash, calibrated for balanced contrast.
  • 4 export resolutions: Export at 64, 128, 256, or 512px directly rendered on canvas.
  • PNG & Data URL export: Download as high-res PNG or copy Base64 image data URL directly.
  • 100% Client-side: FNV-1a hashing and canvas drawing run locally in browser memory.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will the same username always generate the exact same avatar?
Yes. The seed text is hashed deterministically using FNV-1a. That 32-bit hash drives the grid cell pattern and the hue, so identical input always yields an identical image on any device.
Is the hash algorithm cryptographically secure?
No, and it is not intended to be. FNV-1a is a rapid non-cryptographic hash ideal for deterministic visuals. For cryptographic hashing, use SHA-256 or bcrypt instead.
Why is the identicon pattern mirrored horizontally?
Horizontal symmetry creates visually pleasing, balanced geometric shapes resembling crests or glyphs, ensuring almost any seed yields an aesthetic result.
Does changing the resolution alter the avatar pattern?
No. The underlying 5x5 grid layout and hue remain identical. The resolution selector only affects canvas pixel dimensions and exported image sharpness.
Is any seed text or generated avatar sent to a remote server?
No. Hashing, canvas rasterization, and file downloads execute exclusively in local browser memory with zero network egress.
