About This Tool

This tool wraps three native browser APIs: getUserMedia for camera/mic access, a video element for live preview, and MediaRecorder for capture into a simple record/stop/download flow. No video frame or audio sample is ever sent to a server; the whole pipeline runs in this tab memory, and the final file only leaves your machine when you explicitly download it.

It picks the best supported WebM codec automatically (VP9, falling back to VP8 or another supported variant) via MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported, so you do not need to know your browser capabilities ahead of time.

Key Features

  • Clear permission flow: Explicit "Enable camera & mic" step before anything is requested.
  • Live preview stage: See exactly what is being captured before and during recording.
  • Automatic codec selection: Prefers VP9, falls back to whatever WebM variant your browser supports.
  • Instant playback: Review the recording in-page immediately after stopping.
  • One-click download: Save the .webm file locally; nothing is stored on or sent to remote servers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my recording get uploaded anywhere?
No. The camera/microphone stream and the recorded Blob only ever exist in this browser tab memory. There is no upload step: the only way the video leaves your machine is if you click Download.
Why do I need HTTPS or localhost for this to work?
navigator.mediaDevices.getUserMedia (the API that grants camera/mic access) is restricted by browsers to secure contexts (HTTPS or localhost) as a security measure. On a plain HTTP page it will not be available at all.
The page says my browser does not support recording, why?
Either getUserMedia or MediaRecorder is missing or blocked, which can happen on some older mobile browsers, locked-down corporate browsers, or in-app webviews. Try a current desktop Chrome, Firefox, Edge, or Safari.
What video format does it record in?
WebM with the VP9 codec when the browser supports it, falling back to VP8 or whatever WebM variant MediaRecorder.isTypeSupported confirms. Safari may record to MP4 instead depending on version.
I denied camera access by mistake, how do I retry?
Browsers remember a denial for the site. Click the camera/lock icon in your address bar, allow camera and microphone for this site, then reload and try again.
