About This Tool

Quick note taking often requires more structure than a single notepad, but full note taking suites can be heavy and intrusive. Floating Notes provides a distraction-free multi-note scratchpad that runs directly in your browser.

Organize ideas with automatic hashtag detection (such as #todo or #meeting), write with Markdown formatting, and toggle between editing and formatted preview mode. Notes are saved instantly to your browser localStorage with built-in JSON backup and import capabilities.

Key Features

  • Multi-note workspace: Create, rename, switch, and delete multiple independent scratchpads with instant auto-save.
  • Automatic hashtag categorization: Tags like #ideas or #urgent typed anywhere in your note content are detected and grouped automatically.
  • Live Markdown preview: Toggle between raw text editing and formatted HTML preview supporting headings, lists, bold, and code blocks.
  • JSON backup and restore: Export your entire notepad to a portable JSON backup file and restore it on any browser or computer.
  • Quota resilience: Safeguards your data with proactive storage checking and clean QuotaExceededError handling.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are my notes stored?
All notes are stored strictly in your browser local storage (localStorage). No notes are ever transmitted to or stored on our servers.
What happens if I clear my browser cookies and site data?
Clearing browser site data will erase your local storage. We recommend clicking "Export JSON Backup" regularly to keep local backups of important notes.
How do hashtags work in notes?
Type a hash symbol followed by alphanumeric characters (for example, #project or #todo). The tag filter sidebar updates automatically to allow one-click filtering.
Is Markdown formatting supported?
Yes. You can use standard Markdown syntax including headings (#), lists (- or numbers), code blocks (```), and bold/italic text.
