About This Tool

Checking boxes for Node, Python, Go, Rust, Java, macOS, Windows, Linux, VS Code, JetBrains, Docker, and Terraform merges each stack real-world patterns (the same ones GitHub ships in its own gitignore template collection) into a single file. Patterns shared between stacks (like a plain .env from both Node and Python) are de-duplicated so the line only appears once, and each stack block keeps a # Stack comment header for readability.

It only generates text for you to save as .gitignore in your project root: it does not touch your repository or any existing .gitignore file.

Key Features

  • 12 real stack templates: Languages, operating systems, editors, and infra tooling sourced from standard templates.
  • Multi-select combining: Check as many stacks as apply to your project; all selected patterns merge into one output.
  • Global de-duplication: A pattern already emitted by one stack section is safely dropped from every later section.
  • # Stack comment headers: Each section is clearly labeled so you can see at a glance which stack a block came from.
  • Live generation: The output updates immediately as you check or uncheck stacks.
  • Copy or download: Copy the text directly or download it as a ready-to-use .gitignore file.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where do these patterns come from?
They are adapted from GitHub canonical gitignore template collection (github/gitignore) for each language and OS, plus widely-used Docker and Terraform conventions, not invented patterns.
What happens if two stacks share the same pattern?
It is only emitted once, under whichever selected stack section comes first in the output. No line is ever duplicated.
Can I select multiple operating systems or editors at once?
Yes. Checkboxes are not exclusive: pick any combination of languages, OSes, editors, and infra tools that apply to your project.
Does this overwrite my existing .gitignore?
No. This only generates text in your browser. Downloading saves a new file locally; merging it into an existing .gitignore is up to you.
Is anything uploaded to a server?
No. Stack selection and generation both run entirely client-side.
