About This Tool

Smartphones and digital cameras embed Exchangeable Image File Format (EXIF) segments inside JPEG and PNG files. These binary segments often contain exact GPS latitude/longitude coordinates, device serial numbers, lens models, and timestamps.

This tool parses the raw TIFF IFD0, Exif SubIFD, and GPS IFD directories directly in browser memory and lets you download a clean copy with all APP1..APP15, COM, and tEXt metadata segments stripped without touching the compressed pixel stream.

Key Features

  • Lossless Byte-Stream Splicing: Removes JPEG APP1..APP15/COM markers and PNG tEXt/eXIf chunks directly without canvas re-encoding or quality degradation.
  • GPS Coordinate Extraction: Decodes rational degree/minute/second GPS tags into decimal latitude and longitude coordinates and flags privacy-sensitive fields.
  • Built-in Synthetic Test Sample: Includes an in-memory synthetic JPEG containing camera and GPS EXIF headers so you can test inspection and stripping immediately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does stripping metadata reduce image quality or re-compress the JPEG?
No. Unlike canvas-based tools that decode and re-encode the image (causing generation loss), this tool splices out the binary APP1..APP15 and COM metadata markers directly from the byte stream while leaving the compressed SOS image scan data untouched.
Which metadata tags pose a privacy risk when sharing photos online?
GPSLatitude and GPSLongitude reveal the exact physical location where a photo was taken. CameraOwnerName, BodySerialNumber, Artist, Make, Model, Software, and DateTimeOriginal can also link an anonymous image back to a specific device or person.
Are my photos uploaded to any server?
Never. The file is read into a local Uint8Array via FileReader in your browser tab. Network egress is zero bytes.
What PNG metadata chunks are inspected and removed?
For PNG files, the tool inspects and removes tEXt, iTXt, zTXt, eXIf, and tIME chunks while preserving IHDR, PLTE, IDAT, and IEND image chunks.
