About This Tool

Translates letters, digits, and punctuation into the official ICAO / NATO radiotelephony spelling alphabet (Alfa, Bravo, Charlie, ..., Zulu) and decodes phonetic sequences back into plain text.

Useful for reading out serial numbers, flight confirmation codes, license plates, Wi-Fi passwords, and domain names clearly over voice calls.

Key Features

  • Official ICAO spellings + alias decoding: Outputs standard ICAO spellings (Alfa, Juliett, X-ray) and accepts common variants (Alpha, Juliet, Xray, Niner, Tree, Fife) when decoding.
  • Digits and punctuation: Translates digits 0-9 and common symbols (Dash, Stop, Slant, At, Hash, Question, Exclamation).
  • Configurable word separators: Separate words with a slash (/), a newline, or an explicit [space] token.
  • Optional case distinction: Mark uppercase letters in ALL CAPS (ALFA) and lowercase letters in lowercase (bravo) when reading case-sensitive strings.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is it spelled "Alfa" and "Juliett" instead of "Alpha" and "Juliet"?
The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standardized "Alfa" and "Juliett" so speakers of languages where "ph" is not pronounced as "f" or where a final "-et" is silent (such as French) still pronounce the words identically. Our decoder accepts both spellings.
How are spaces between words represented?
By default, spaces between input words become " / " so multi-word phrases stay distinct from letter boundaries. You can switch the word separator to Newline or [space] in the toolbar.
Does this tool send any input to a server?
No. All conversion runs locally in your browser.
